Why Golfers Travel to Dundee & Perth

You can play an Open venue. Carnoustie has hosted The Open eight times, most recently in 2018, and its closing stretch over the Barry Burn is one of the hardest finishes in golf. Visitors are welcome all year, so it is a bucket list round your whole group can play.

Gleneagles is a destination on its own. The resort hosted the 2014 Ryder Cup on the PGA Centenary Course, and its five star hotel, spa and three courses make it one of the best golf resorts in Europe.

There is real variety. Links on the coast, moorland and parkland inland, and a city in the middle with Dundee's V&A museum and waterfront. It is also easy to add St Andrews & Fife, just across the Tay.

The Best Golf Courses in Dundee & Perth

Carnoustie Championship Course - The Open venue and the main reason most golfers come to Angus. Long, exposed and brilliantly tough, with the Barry Burn waiting on the 17th and 18th. The Burnside and Buddon courses next door are shorter and kinder, and make a good warm up. The Carnoustie Golf Hotel & Spa overlooks the 18th green, so you can walk to the first tee.

Montrose Golf Links - One of the oldest golf links in the world, half an hour up the coast from Carnoustie. Dunes, sea views and a proper links test without the Open venue price.

Gleneagles PGA Centenary Course - The Jack Nicklaus design that hosted the 2014 Ryder Cup. Big, modern and in perfect condition, with views across Perthshire.

Gleneagles The King's Course and  he Queen's Course - The King's is James Braid's classic moorland course and many golfers' favourite at Gleneagles. The Queen's is shorter and more forgiving, ideal for a relaxed second round.

Panmure Golf Club-  A traditional links just along from Carnoustie, and the course where Ben Hogan prepared for his 1953 Open win. Quieter than its famous neighbour and a real hidden gem.

Monifieth Links - Two links courses, the Medal and the Ashludie, between Dundee and Carnoustie. The Medal is used for Open qualifying when the Championship comes to Carnoustie.

Blairgowrie Golf Club - Heathland golf at its best, with the Rosemount and Lansdowne courses cut through pine and birch woods north of Perth. Rosemount is often ranked among the best inland courses in Scotland.

Murrayshall Golf Club - A parkland course on the Murrayshall estate just outside Perth, with views over the Tay valley. Also nearby: Downfield in Dundee and the clifftop Arbroath Golf Links.

When Is the Best Time to Play Golf in Dundee & Perth?

May to September is the main season, with long days and the links running firm and fast. June evenings stay light until after 10pm.

April and October are quieter and often better value. The coast is usually drier and milder than inland Perthshire, so the Angus links are a good choice early and late in the year. Pack waterproofs and layers whatever the month.

Travel Tips for Visiting Golfers

Getting there- Edinburgh Airport is about an hour from Gleneagles and Perth and around an hour and a quarter from Carnoustie. Dundee and Perth both have mainline railway stations, and Gleneagles has its own station.

Transport - the coast courses and Gleneagles are about an hour apart, so a hire car or minibus works best for a mixed trip.

Carnoustie - the Championship Course asks for a handicap certificate, and tee times go quickly in summer. Book early.

Weather - pack waterproofs, layers and a wind shirt for the coast.

Non-golfers - the spa and country pursuits at Gleneagles, the V&A Dundee, Scone Palace near Perth and whisky distilleries in Perthshire.
