Overview
Montrose Golf Links is a true piece of golfing history. Golf has been played on these links since at least 1562, making it one of the oldest golf courses in the world. With two traditional links courses on Scotland's east coast, it's a brilliant addition to any trip taking in Carnoustie and St Andrews!
The Courses
The 1562 Course (known as the Medal Course until 2018) is the championship layout. Shaped by Willie Park Jr. with help from Old Tom Morris, it measures 6,585 yards from the back tees and plays to a par of 71. The routing has barely changed in over 100 years, and it has hosted Open Championship Final Qualifying twice.
Several holes run right alongside the beach, so the North Sea wind is a constant companion. Expect deep pot bunkers, gorse, bouncy fairways and raised greens. As the locals say, when it's breezy, swing easy!
The Broomfield Course is the shorter of the two, at 4,830 yards and a par of 66. It's flatter and more forgiving, making it ideal for a warm-up, a relaxed afternoon round or golfers who want to enjoy the links without the full challenge of the 1562.
Signature Holes
1562 Course Hole 3: Par 3
A short hole of around 150 yards, played across a deep grassy gully to a tabletop green. It's only a short iron, but the wind decides which club you need. Miss the green and you'll be scrambling!
1562 Course Hole 17: Par 4
At 418 yards, the 17th asks for a solid drive with out of bounds down the right, then an approach to a raised green tucked into the corner. One of the best holes on the course!
The Clubhouse
Montrose Golf Links doesn't have a clubhouse of its own. Instead, visitors use the clubhouses of Royal Montrose Mercantile Golf Club and Montrose Caledonia Golf Club, both just a few yards from the 1st tee.
You'll find changing rooms, a bar and food after your round, and the pro shop is close to the 1st tee for anything you need.

The Location
Montrose Golf Links is located on Traill Drive, around a mile from the centre of Montrose on Scotland's Angus coast. Aberdeen Airport is around an hour's drive, making Montrose a great stop on a golf trip along the east coast.
