While some are self-explanatory, many are not so obvious. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can seem like golfers are talking a different language, but we\u2019re here to translate. Here\u2019s the golf course terms explained:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Hole<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, come on. If you don\u2019t know this one, it\u2019s going to take a while to get in the loop. It\u2019s really what it says it is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The game\u2019s aim is to get the ball in the <em>hole<\/em> that\u2019s located on the <em>green<\/em>. But it\u2019s not as easy as it sounds, it\u2019s the most frustrating part of the game<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Putt<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The action of knocking the ball into the <em>hole <\/em>on the green. Watching your friend trying is always complete and <em>putter<\/em> madness. But, be prepared, it\u2019s only funny until your turn comes around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Fairway<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The area between the <em>tee-box <\/em>and the <em>green. <\/em>If you don\u2019t hit the fairway from your drive, we\u2019ve got some bad news. Your friends who found the fairway are off to a better start. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it was that bad, you can always ask for a <em>mulligan<\/em> from the gang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Tee Box<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Where the glory starts (or the frustration). You <em>tee off <\/em>at the beginning of each <em>hole<\/em> to gain distance up the <em>fairway<\/em>, or possibly land on the <em>dancefloor. <\/em>Some like it, some don\u2019t. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hitting a straight shot off the <em>tee box <\/em>is always satisfying, but there\u2019s always a friend that <em>shanks <\/em>or <em>slices<\/em> it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Green<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The patch of grass at the end of the <em>fairway <\/em>that\u2019s as well maintained as your retired neighbour\u2019s garden. It\u2019s always perfectly trimmed. You want to end up on here. If you do, then you\u2019re dancing on the <em>dancefloor.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Rough<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Landing here is rough. It\u2019s the longer grass usually located on either side of the <em>fairway. <\/em>If you\u2019re having an off day, you might find yourself in the <em>rough. <\/em>And believe us, hitting back out of the rough is a bloody nightmare!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Bunker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t even get us started. These pesky sand traps are always getting in the way. They are usually placed around the <em>fairway<\/em> or surrounding the <em>green. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting in the <em>bunker<\/em> is easily done, but getting out can be hard. It can sometimes cause a Happy Gilmore rage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Fore<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While this can be fun to shout, it\u2019s a lifesaver. It\u2019s shouted when a ball is heading towards someone, and you want them to cover their heads and duck. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, you can\u2019t hit the green, but for some reason, you can nearly hit an OAP?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Executive Course<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re playing an <em>executive course<\/em>, we\u2019re afraid it\u2019s not as VIP as it sounds. It\u2019s essentially a shorter course than your average, with a <em>par <\/em>of 65 or less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s great for beginners, so hit these up if you\u2019re looking to dip your toes in the water and lose your course virginity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/groupiagolf.com\/guides\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/2.jpg\" alt=\"Golf course terms\" class=\"wp-image-49\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Links<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The holy grail of golf courses. You\u2019ve probably got that friend with tall tales about how he played the original <em>links<\/em>, the Old Course\u2026 yeah right. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the most desired for a reason though, the natural terrain makes for a challenging game. But with challenges, comes frustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Caddie<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The friend that comes along but can\u2019t play. Just kidding. <em>Caddies<\/em> are incredibly useful. It\u2019s a person who helps carry your clubs and gives you advice out on the fairways. They are experts of the loop with valuable knowledge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Making your friend that loses a bet your caddie next time round is a laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Fringe<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The awkward grass around the green. It\u2019s not the <em>fairway, <\/em>it\u2019s not the <em>green. <\/em>It\u2019s a slightly longer length than the greens, but you can still <em>sink a<\/em> <em>putt <\/em>from here \u2013 if you\u2019re a <em>scratch golfer<\/em> that is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Slope<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a term used to describe how difficult the course is. If the <em>slope<\/em> is higher, then the course is harder. Always a good excuse to use at the <em>19<sup>th<\/sup> hole <\/em>though, hey?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Scratch<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>scratch<\/em> golfer is a status that all amateurs dream of. You don\u2019t want to place any bets against this person. Pair up with them if you\u2019re playing in twos though.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have a <em>handicap<\/em> of zero which means they score a <em>par <\/em>or better on every hole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Hazards<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Why can\u2019t we just have a clear fairway? It\u2019s the terrible three: <em>bunkers, water hazards, <\/em>and the <em>rough. <\/em>Sometimes it\u2019s as if a few of the squad&#8217;s shots gravitate towards these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Out-of-Bounds<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you end up here you\u2019ve flunked it. You\u2019re too far gone at this point and there could be a potential penalty. It depends on how nice the group are that you\u2019re playing with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s always that one friend who implements harsh rules like they\u2019re part of the USGA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Water Hazard<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A body of water placed anywhere on the fairway. Hitting these not only adds to the scorecard, but you lose your ball. Even the scoring terms for golf are weird. Having a grasp of these will make you sound like an expert on the greens and understand what everybody means from a <em>birdie <\/em>to a <em>bogey.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Par<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The required number of shots to complete a<em> hole<\/em>. You could say you\u2019re on <em>par<\/em> with a <em>scratch golfer<\/em> if you achieve a <em>par. <\/em>It\u2019s a solid effort!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Birdie<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Scoring one under <em>par<\/em>. An example would be taking 4 shots to complete a par-5. You\u2019re no beginner if you\u2019re getting <em>birdies. <\/em>It\u2019s a good achievement that should earn respect from the gang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Eagle<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Scoring two under <em>par<\/em>. So, it would take you 3 shots to complete a par-5. You should have a few rounds of beer bought for you if you get an <em>eagle.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Albatross <\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Why are you still working your 9-5? It\u2019s a score of three under <em>par.<\/em> So, it would take you two shots to complete a par-5. Who does that? Even a pro would be over the moon with an <em>albatross. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seriously, if you\u2019ve got this on your locker, quit your day job and sign up for the next Masters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Hole-in-One<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve not heard this before, then you\u2019ve been living under a rock. Even people who have never picked up a 7-iron know what this is. It\u2019s when it takes you one shot to complete the <em>hole<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These usually happen on a par-3 and will give you a legend status. Everybody in the clubhouse has to buy you a pint if you manage this, it\u2019s an unwritten rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Bogey<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you score one over <em>par. <\/em>&nbsp;It\u2019s decent for the scorecards and certainly something a beginner or duffer would take. It won\u2019t mess up your scorecards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Double Bogey<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you score two over <em>par. <\/em>This is one more shot than a <em>bogey<\/em>. You\u2019ve not failed, but you\u2019re starting to slip up and let your competition take over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Triple Bogey<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh dear. Where did it all go wrong? Three over <em>par<\/em>. Kiss goodbye to that winning jackpot money if you\u2019re getting a <em>triple bogey<\/em>. We hope you\u2019re ready for the banter from your group at the clubhouse after this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Handicap<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The dreaded question for the average duffer: \u201cWhat\u2019s your handicap?\u201d It\u2019s a numerical measurement of a golfer\u2019s ability. The lower the handicap, the better. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all start with a high handicap; some never leave the high handicap range\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"funny-golf-terms-explained\"><strong>Funny Golf Terms Explained<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/groupiagolf.com\/guides\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/4.jpg\" alt=\"Golf course terms\" class=\"wp-image-51\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from playing, the funny terms are loved by everybody. It\u2019s one of the best parts. Golf has an ever-growing list of funny golf terms to describe blunders on the fairway, post-golf activities, or somebody\u2019s skill level. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use these on the <em>fairways <\/em>or at the <em>19<sup>th<\/sup><\/em> to get a laugh out of your group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Gimme<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A <em>putt<\/em> that\u2019s so close it\u2019s not even worth taking the shot. If your friend won\u2019t give you a <em>gimme, <\/em>even if you could blow it in, it\u2019s probably a playful jab at your abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Lumberjack<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A golfer who always hits the woods rather than the fairway or the green. For some reason, some players just love taking bark out of the trees\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Mulligan<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Desperate times call for desperate measures. It\u2019s tough swinging in front of an audience, especially when you <em>shank <\/em>it into the woods or <em>slice <\/em>it into a water hazard. This is when a <em>mulligan<\/em> is called for. It\u2019s another attempt that doesn\u2019t get recorded on the scorecards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Swing Oil<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yep, you guessed right. It\u2019s the good stuff: beer. Whether you have a drink at the halfway house or celebrate at the clubhouse, it\u2019s a rite of passage. Some even claim to play better after a beer halfway through. Others, not so much. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which one are you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Duffer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re afraid to say if you\u2019re just starting, this is probably you. It\u2019s a playful way of naming an inexperienced golfer, or the name for a bad shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Afraid of the Dark<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A classic excuse from the one in the group with the awful short game. \u201c<em>It won\u2019t go in the hole; my ball is afraid of the dark<\/em>\u201d. Translation: \u201c<em>My short game is awful and I\u2019m not accurate enough to putt the ball into the hole<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>19<sup>th<\/sup> Hole<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Everybody&#8217;s favourite hole. While you\u2019re playing, it\u2019s at the back of everybody\u2019s mind. It\u2019s where all bets are paid up, the banter about the round begins, and you get stuck into a comforting meal and a few beverages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Dawn Patrol<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A term used to describe golfers who love the early morning tee-offs, or \u201cbreakfast tees\u201d. These golfers have most likely not been out on the lash the night before, but they\u2019re probably going to that evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Divot<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t beat a good old divot. It\u2019s when you take a large chunk out of the ground with your swing attempt. It\u2019s always funny watching your friend hit the ground more than the ball. It is course etiquette to fix these, if possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Chilli-Dip<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another fun term used to describe a swing that takes a large <em>divot<\/em> out of the ground. It\u2019s used more commonly for a chip shot instead. Everybody laughs at a chilli-dip; it reminds them of Happy Gilmore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Mouth Wedge<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Shout out to the friend who talks too much when somebody is taking a shot. It\u2019s common courtesy for everybody to be silent while a shot is taken, but they just don\u2019t. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe they\u2019re trying to put you off? Maybe they\u2019re just winding you up? Either way, it\u2019s annoying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Dancefloor<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A funny term used to describe the green. If you land here, you\u2019ll be dancing to celebrate a successful approach shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Shank<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve had a nightmare if you hit a shank. It\u2019s when a swing goes immediately to the right. At least it might be useful on a dogleg, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u26f3 <strong>Slice<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When a shot goes from left to right because of a sidespin.
