Drink Responsibly ⚠️
It’s important to have fun but knowing your limit is key.
Yes, it can loosen your swing, encourage risk-reward shots, and create a casual atmosphere. However, you must consider safety first.
On top of this, think of others, the pace of play, and respect the course etiquette, property, and staff.
All of these are important.
We strongly recommend that you also drink water, especially if you’re playing in a hot location—alcohol is not a water replacement. Stay hydrated while playing 18 holes.
Remember, the aim is to have fun, so don’t ruin the round for yourself or others.
Is It Okay to Drink When Playing Golf? 🏌️♂️
Of course, clubs in Marbella and the Algarve sell ice-cold beverages on buggies, so it would be rude not to.
Many courses also boast a legendary halfway house, which in some cases, like the legendary Portmarnock Jameson Halfway House, sells alcohol.
Nothing like a Guinness to loosen up on the back nine.
Know your limit and this can add a new dimension to the beautiful game.
Why Play Drinking Games While Playing Golf? 🍻
Not that you needed any excuses, but here are our thoughts:
🍺 Socialising – It brings players together and creates a relaxing atmosphere.
🍺 Extra Fun – Golf is already legendary, but it adds an unpredictable twist.
🍺 Add Competition – More rules and challenges to make it interesting.

🍺 New Excuse – To add to the never-ending list.
🍺 Because You’re Legends – Nobody does a golf trip like your group.
On the Course Golf Drinking Games ⛳
Let’s tee off with fun golf drinking games on the course, crack open a cold one, and prepare for a legendary round.
Greenies
An absolute classic. Usually, this one is played on a par-3, but you can do it on any fairway—it’s dead simple.
Each player bets a number of sips based on who they think will land closest to the pin. Whoever is nearest distributes the total sips to the others.
Hole-in-One 🕳️
For the average golfer, the chances of a hole-in-one are 1 in 12,500, so the punishment for this one is hefty. If a player pulls off the miracle, every else must open a new drink and finish it.
Bingo, Bango, Bongo
This one applies pressure to every aspect of the game. Here’s the point system:
- Bingo: The first person to hit the dancefloor.
- Bango: First player closest to the pin.
- Bongo: First to sink it.
The loser must have a drink.
🚨 Tip: This one is about the approach, so aim directly for the green!
Birdie 🐤
You guessed it. If a player scores a birdie, the others have a drink.
Now, this adds excitement to beginner groups, but if you’re a bunch of low-handicappers, and birdies are frequent, up the ante and apply this to eagles.
Water Hazard Wager
As if losing your Pro V1 wasn’t enough; take a few sips every time you hit the drink.
The Bunker Shot 🏖️
We could be boring and tell you to take a sip every time you hit the sand.
But we are GroupiaGolf, so you should also total up the number of strokes it takes to leave the bunkers.
That one friend who makes several attempts is going to have a nightmare.
Three-Putt
The dreaded three-putt. Even the pros have this in their locker, so what hope is there for us amateurs?
For every three-putt, take three big gulps of your drink and add another for anything above three (if you somehow manage that).
Stroke-Over-Par ➕
Heads up, this one is for the scratch golfers, low-handicaps, or the brave.
For every stroke over par, you must take a sip at the end of the hole, so duffers should steer clear.
Longest Drive, Shortest Drink
Sometimes, driving off the tee is unpredictable.
You can bomb it 250+ yards and then hit a 50-yard worm burner on the other.
This one is simple: the person who hits the longest drive gets to decide how many sips the shortest driver has.
Fairway 🌲
Find the fairway, and you’re safe; miss the fairway, and you drink! Slicers beware.
Mulligan
Mulligans split opinion like LIV Golf. Some like them, some don’t—but if your group allows them, a forfeit is due. Anytime a player takes a mulligan, they must finish their drink.
Even or Odd 🔢
Even or Odd is one of the best golf drinking games because it’s played throughout and not all about skill.
Before the round starts, each player chooses odd or even. Odds drink on the odd-number fairways, and evens drink on the even-number fairways.
You have until the end of the whole to finish that beer or it tallies on to the next one.
Bring your a-game!
Chip In
Is there anything more satisfying than a chip shot into the hole? Yes, making everybody else drink when your chip shot holes out.
This is a great excuse to practice your chipping.
Wolf 🐺
One player is the wolf at the start of the hole, and each player takes turns to be the wolf.
Every other player will tee off first, and the wolf chooses who they pair with for the hole, if the wolf’s team wins, everybody else drinks.
Loser Coughs Up
This one is simple, and it’s a great way to bolster the kitty for the 19th hole or when you hit the town.
On any par-3, whoever is last to hole out must drink their number of strokes and add a pre-agreed amount to the drinks kitty for the evening.
Simple.
Off the Course Drinking Games 🍾
Don’t sweat it, the swing oil doesn’t stop flowing after the round, so whether you’re in the clubhouse or a lively bar, these are some fun golf drinking games.
Hole-by-Hole Scorecard Recap
Grab a seat at the 19th, it’s time to compare scorecards.
Count them up, and for every hole a player has the worst score, that’s one sip.
Let’s hope you perform!
Or mix it up. Each time you have the lowest score, you get to dish out the sips.
Golf Ball Drinking Game 🏌️
This one is a classic, and you can play at the clubhouse, a pub, or on your walk between bars.
Before you hit the town, the loser of the round earlier starts with the golf ball in their pocket and throughout the night they must offload it into somebody else’s pocket.
Stealth is key!
Whoever has the golf ball in their pocket at the end of the night must down their drink.
Golf Ball Pint Game
Another banger, but with a golf twist!
This one is guaranteed to have you on the edge of your seat and can be played throughout the day or evening.
If the golf ball is placed in your drink, down it! The power (or golf ball) is then in your hands, and you can pick the next victim.

FAQs
What is the rule for golf drinking games?
The only rules are that you respect the rules of the course, the club’s etiquette, and the safety of others. In terms of the drinking games, you can bend the rules as you please to suit your group’s preferences.
Why do people drink and play golf?
People drink and play golf on trips with their buddies. It’s a way of socialising, loosing up, reducing the pressure, and creating more memories together. Plus, in the Algarve or Costa del Sol, it can get hot, so an ice-cold beverage will cool you down.
Can you drink and play golf?
Always check the club rules beforehand. Many places allow groups to drink, and certain courses, like Marbella Golf & Country Club, deliver beers on a buggy bar. Again, respect the rules, don’t leave empty cans on the course, and drink responsibly.
Can you play golf drinking games without alcohol?
Yes, of course you can. Whether you’re tee-total or prefer to swing while sober, just stay hydrated with some water or treat yourself to a soft drink, coffee or energy drink. If you still want to join in, you can play with your preferred non-alcoholic beverages.
