Overview
There’s something special about golfing under bright blue skies as summer fades into autumn — and few places capture that feeling quite like Royal Winchester Golf Club. On a gloriously sunny day in September, our GroupiaGolf team made the short trip to Hampshire’s only “Royal” course to see why it’s such a local favourite.
Spoiler: sunshine, skyline views, and silky greens — what more could you want?
The Setting
Perched just outside the cathedral city of Winchester, this course combines downland character with old-school English charm. Designed in 1888 by the legendary J.H. Taylor, the layout rolls gracefully over natural chalk hills, offering wide horizons and firm, fast turf.
The city spire glints in the distance, birdsong replaces the seaside wind, and you can almost feel the course’s history beneath your feet. It’s golf in a beautifully calm, countryside setting — less wild than a coastal links, but just as strategic.

The Course
Royal Winchester rewards accuracy over power. At just over 6,300 yards, it’s not long — but it’s clever. Fairways tilt and twist, greens slope subtly, and elevation changes make club choice everything.
Highlights include:
- The 3rd hole, a stunning par-4 that plays downhill towards the city skyline — picture-perfect in the September sun.
- The 10th, rising steeply to a plateau green framed by ancient oaks.
- The 18th, a short par-4 that tempts a risky drive over the bunkers back toward the clubhouse terrace.
It’s a course that keeps you thinking, keeps you smiling, and looks spectacular when the late-afternoon light hits those golden chalk hills.

Clubhouse & Hospitality
After your round, head to the Royal Winchester clubhouse terrace, one of the best spots in Hampshire to soak up the sunshine. The team are friendly, the food is spot-on, and the post-round pint tastes even better when you’re overlooking the 18th green.
The interior blends tradition with comfort — think wooden beams, local memorabilia, and plenty of space for groups. On Sundays, the kitchen turns out hearty roast lunches and fresh sandwiches that hit the spot after four hours in the sun.

It’s relaxed, refined, and refreshingly fun. The perfect September Sunday.
